This medieval castle on the banks of the Rhine dates back to the 14th century.
This medieval castle on the banks of the Rhine dates back to the 14th century. For 150 years, it served as the residence of the archbishops and electors of Mainz. The Gutenberg Museum in its tower honours the inventor of printing press, Johannes Gutenberg, who lived in Eltville am Rhein during the 15th century. ‘Eltvil 1465’ is the name given to the work by Eltville artist Michael Apitz. It commemorates Gutenberg’s appointment to the role of courtier in the Electoral Castle in 1465. The Great Hall displays historic wall paintings and a museum presents the ‘Alta Villa Collection’, featuring exhibits from the town’s history. The raised platform provides a wonderful view. The castle’s rose gardens earned Eltville the title of ‘Rose Town’ in 1988 and transform the grounds
into a fragrant sea of flowers during the summer. The tourist information centre in the castle shop has a range of gifts and souvenirs.
