Schärjer-Denkmal
Mittelstraße 3/4, 56564 Neuwied
Monument in the lower Mittelstrasse, reminiscent of the former dock workers. The so-called Schürger - Schärjer in Neuwied dialect - loaded Rhine barges with pumice stones from local quarries. Term "Schärjer" today synonym for the citizens of Neuwied town centre.
Why the people of Neuwied are called "Schärjer" Even today, the people of Neuwied are still referred to as Näiwidder Schärjer. Schärjer are labourers who push a wheelbarrow, a Schürreskarre - Schärskaa in dialect - in front of them. Around 100 years ago, such barrows were the main tool used by Neuwied workers to load and unload ships on the Rhine. Many people from Neuwied earned their living as "Schärjer". They mainly used the carts to load pumice stones onto the ships. A monument to the "Schärjer" has been erected in Mittelstraße. There you can see him and his Schärskaa, loaded with stones, "marching" towards the Rhine.
