Schärjer-Denkmal
Mittelstraße 3/4, 56564 Neuwied
The monument in the lower Mittelstraße commemorates the former dockworkers who loaded ships with pumice stones in hard labor as so-called Schürgen = Schärjer (Neuwieder dialect).
Why the Neuwied people are called "Schärjer"
Even today, the people of Neuwied are referred to as Näiwidder Schärjer.
Schärjer are workers who push a wheelbarrow, a Schürreskarre - in dialect, Schärskaa - in front of them. About 100 years ago, such carts were the main work tool for Neuwied residents for loading and unloading Rhine ships. Many Neuwied earned their living as "Schärjer" in this way. Predominantly, they loaded pumice stones onto the ships with the carts. A monument has been erected for the Schärjer in Mittelstraße. There, you can see him and his Schärskaa, loaded with stones, "marching" towards the Rhine.
