Johannis-Church, Romanesque pillar basilica built around 1130
The Romanesque, transeptless pillar basilica with side aisle galleries and six-story west tower was built around 1130 and is thus the oldest gallery church on the Middle Rhine. Beneath the present church lie the foundations of a Carolingian predecessor church from before 850; a second larger hall church stood on this site around the year 1000. After devastation and destruction, the church was rebuilt in 1856/57. Today, the church and the monastery are in the care of the Fathers of the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary. Attached to it is a high school.
