St. Mary's Catholic Church
53498 Bad Breisig
Attraction in Bad Breisig.
In 1337, a chapel was documented at this site.
The foundation stone for the current Catholic parish church was laid in 1654 by Abbess Anna Salomee. Construction did not begin until 1717.
The expansion of St. Marien Church dates back to 1977 and includes, among other things, a Gothic silver cross with a relic of the Templar Order. The gallery with its impressive organ structure is a cultural monument of a special kind and represents the visible front of the late Baroque organ case.
Designed by the artist Benjamin Opitz from Groden between 1755 and 1759, this organ prospect adorned the organ of the Evangelical Lutheran Lamberti Church in the East Frisian town of Aurich for 200 years. In 1959, the St. Marien parish community took it over from there. At the same time, the old organ was replaced by a new one. The organ builder Rowan West from Altenahr created an instrument in the Northern German Baroque style, thus establishing a stylistic and acoustic harmony between the organ work and the Baroque style of the organ case and the rest of the church's furnishings.
