Around 900, the Walpots came to Bassenheim, after whom the square in the centre of the village is named. The knights, barons, counts and imperial counts, who acquired the epithet "von Bassenheim" after displacing a second local noble family in 1307, played a decisive role in shaping the history of the community until 1861, when they had to sell the manor due to debt. In the middle of Walpotplatz, which is surrounded by beautiful half-timbered houses, is a history fountain.
