Die Geschichte des Weinbaus der Familie Leitz geht zurück bis ins Jahr 1744.

The history of winegrowing in the Leitz family dates back to 1744. Johannes Leitz was born in Rüdesheim am Rhein in 1964. His grandfather Josef Leitz rebuilt the winery after it was completely destroyed in the Second World War. It was then run for a short time by Johannes' father, who died when Johannes was 14 months old. His mother ran the business as a sideline until Johannes Leitz took over the 2.9 ha estate himself in 1985 (after completing his training as a master winemaker). Since then, Johannes Leitz has led the business to become a nationally and internationally successful winery with the considerable size of just under 130 hectares (of which around 40 hectares are owned by the company). In addition to Germany, Norway, Sweden, England and the USA, the main sales markets now include a further 33 countries. The steady growth of recent years has done the company no harm at all, and the top dry wines from the BERG SCHLOSSBERG, BERG ROTTLAND and BERG KAISERSTEINFELS vineyards are still among the best in their category. Johannes' wines bear an individual signature and reflect the terroir of the Rüdesheimer Berg in a unique way.

In addition to his terroir-driven top wines, Johannes Leitz has also succeeded in developing wines such as the "Dragonstone" Riesling and the "EINS-ZWEI-DRY", which won the "if Communication Design Award 2009", into internationally successful brands.Despite his great international success, Johannes Leitz remains firmly rooted in his homeland.Out of love for his unique vineyards and reverence for the great Rüdesheim mountain, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley, Johannes Leitz is working with the nature conservation authorities to preserve this centuries-old cultural landscape and to recultivate sunken and partially buried old terraces in BERG ROTTLAND and BERG KAISERSTEINFELS.

Johannes Leitz has been a member of the VDP (Association of Germany's Best Wine Producers) since 1996 and is one of the few ambassadors of German Riesling who has brought the modern qualities and knowledge of these fine wines to today's international markets. As a highlight of his successes to date, he was named "Winemaker of the Year 2011" by Gault Millau and in 2019 the winery finally received the long-awaited 5th grape/star in Gault Millau and Eichelmann, which are among the most important German wine guides. With this award, the winery is one of the best wineries in Germany following consistent quality optimization. We are all the more honored as this is a long-term development that has been evaluated by both wine guides.
