ADFC: Der Neuwieder Deich
In der Lach 1, 56567 Neuwied
The 7.5 km long Neuwieder Dyke has been reliably protecting the city of Neuwied from flooding from the Rhine and the Wied since its completion in 1932. Its most notable structure is the 500 m long dyke wall with a level tower, dyke crown, and pumping station. Furthermore, there are additional interesting technical infrastructures that are largely unknown to the public. In cooperation with the Förderverein Neuwieder Deich, founded in 2005, the ADFC local group Neuwied offers a guided tour along the Neuwieder Dyke and its technical structures. This includes a visit to the pumping station on the Rasselstein site and the dyke information center, where firsthand information about the Neuwieder Dyke is provided. The tour starts at the parking lot of the Niederbieber primary school, In der Lach 1. From there, it goes along the Wied and, with the kind permission of ASAS, onto the premises of the former Rasselstein company (now ASAS), where the first stop is the pumping station. Through the adjacent dyke gate, the path leads to the Wied Harbor and from there through the castle park to the dyke info center, where the functioning of the dyke is explained using a model and a media wall. There is an opportunity for a small refreshment at the beer garden next to the dyke info center. Afterward, the path continues along the dyke to the Engerser Field until reaching the natural dyke on Engers territory. From there, the return to Niederbieber is made via bike paths and side roads.
